Bill Knight will run for Mayor

Bill Knight has announced that he is running for mayor this year. Why you may ask does this make it onto the GGO Blog? Well, here's why. Bill Knight served as the treasurer for the 1975 Greater Greensboro Open. As a Jaycee, he entered a contest to pick a design for the GGO decanter that year. He won the contest with the idea of putting dogwoods, like the ones at Sedgefield on the decanter. He won a set of golf clubs for his winning entry. Everything relates back to the decanters in some way. Take that Kevin Bacon.

King named Honorary Chairman

Kelly S. King, of Winston-Salem, N.C., has been named the honorary chairman of the 2009 Wyndham Championship. King is the chief executive officer of BB&T Corporation.

King is the third consecutive Honorary Chairman from outside Guilford County, emphasizing the Wyndham Championship’s increasing regional impact. As the honorary chairman, King is serving as an ambassador for the PGA TOUR event which provides important economic benefits for the entire region and the state. As the Wyndham Championship evolves, the honorary chairman leads the charge to promote Piedmont Triad regionalism through the PGA TOUR event.

“Bringing the Piedmont Triad together is particularly important during this difficult economic time,” King said. “The Wyndham Championship is the perfect vehicle to help bring all parts of our region together so that we can all experience growth. The proceeds from this event go to charities so we are helping people. With the economy the way it is, everything we do should be about what we can do to help others, and this needs to be a Piedmont triad effort. It’s an honor to chair this event, help our region grow and assist our Piedmont Triad citizens at the same time.”

King was named as BB&T's chief executive officer effective Jan. 1, 2009. He joined BB&T’s Management Development Program in 1972. He has served in many roles, including chief operating officer and president of BB&T Corporation, banking manager for BB&T’s branch network, manager for the Central and Metropolitan regions, Raleigh city executive, Charlotte business services manager, Statesville consumer loan department manager and Statesville marketing officer. King also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Branch Banking and Trust Company.

A native of Raleigh, N.C., King is the chair of the Piedmont Triad Leadership Group, immediate past chair of the United Way Tocqueville Leadership Campaign and the United Way Tocqueville Leadership Society, and a board member of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce.

The 70th Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 17-23, 2009 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

Ken Green

"Pro golfer Ken Green's brother and girlfriend were killed in a a recreational vehicle accident in which Green a so was hurt.
Green was driving on Interstate 20 near Hickory, Miss., on Monday when the right front tire of his RV blew out. Green was unable to control the vehicle and ran off the road and down an embankment before hitting a large oak tree.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Jon Kalahar said Tuesday that passengers William Y. Green, of Indiantown, Fla., and Jean Marie Hodgin, of Greensboro, N.C., were killed in the wreck. William Green is Ken Green's brother and caddie. Hodgin was the golfer's girlfriend.
Kalahar said Ken Green was not wearing his seat belt. He was flown to University Medical Center in Jackson for treatment with unspecified injuries, and was listed in good condition Tuesday.
Sgt. Malachi Sanders of the Mississippi Highway Patrol said a German shepherd also was killed.
Sanders said it was unclear if the passengers were wearing seat belts. He described the embankment the RV traveled over as ``a small cliff.''
``The whole front of the RV was totally demolished,'' Sanders said.
Green, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour from Danbury, Conn., turned pro in 1980. He has played on the Champions Tour the last two seasons. His best finish this year was seventh at the AT&T Champions Classic in March.
His final years on the PGA Tour were marred by mental illness that that made it difficult for Green to concentrate while playing and led him to the verge of suicide. Now 50, Green has since spoken publicly about his ordeal."

Kimberly and Patrick are Pregnant

"Patrick and I couldn't be more excited…a bit of an understatement. We are expecting a little girl October 31st. 'The bean' (that's what we call her, but she’s a bit bigger than a bean now) is doing dandy according to her last ultrasound. I am 19 weeks along, just one week shy of half-way...gulp! We celebrated my 40th with a FANTASTIC trip to Paris in the early part of May."
