Earl Lanning Jr., died last night at Wesley Long Hospital after a long illness. Earl was a veteran of World War II and was active in the Greensboro Jaycees as a young man. He was the General Chairman of the GGO in 1957.

2013 Wyndham Championship Winner Patrick Reed

Patrick Reed defeated Jordan Spieth with a birdie-3 on the second extra hole (No. 10). On the first playoff hole (No. 18), Spieth drained a putt from 26 feet to save par and force a second hole. Reed had a chance to win on the first playoff hole from just over 7-feet.

2013 Wyndham Championship Revised Sunday Schedule

Due to another forecast for inclement weather, the final round of the Wyndham Championship will begin at 7:15 Sunday morning with golfers starting on both the first and 10th tees, the tournament announced today. The 74th annual Wyndham Championship concludes tomorrow. Saturday’s third round of play began at 7:15 a.m. but went into a weather delay at 8:11 a.m. due to standing water on the golf course. Two hours and 59 minutes later, play resumed. Because of the lengthy delay, the tournament will honor Saturday grounds tickets on Sunday. In addition, for fans arriving at the Wyndham Championship gates prior to 8 a.m. Sunday, final-round admission is free of charge. Those who have already purchased a final-round grounds ticket may bring a guest, free of charge, until 10 a.m. Sunday. Revised Sunday Schedule: 5:30 a.m. Caddy and volunteer lots open; shuttles begin 6:30 a.m. All public parking areas open, parking shuttles begin 6:30 a.m. Tournament gates open 7 a.m. First tee time 2:30 p.m. Approximate completion of play

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama shot an even-par 70 during the first round of the 2013 Wyndham Championship and is on track to earn his PGA TOUR card for 2013-14. He has $676,240 in official money, well inside current No. 125 Greg Chalmers ($583,306). Matsuyama, playing on a Sponsor Exemption at the Wyndham Championship, would need to win this week to be eligible for the FedExCup Playoffs.

Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the 2013 Wyndham Championship. Matsuyama is a native and resident of Japan. He needed a sponsor’s exemption because he is not a PGA TOUR member and does not have status on this tour. Matsuyama is 33rd in the Official World Golf Rankings and will play the Wyndham for the first time next week. The 21-year-old Japan Tour golfer is having a breakthrough season with two wins and two runner-up finishes this year; he is a three-time Japan Tour winner. He finished tied for 10th at the U.S. Open, tied for sixth at the British Open Championship, tied for 16th at the RBC Canadian Open and tied for 21st at last weekend’s Bridgestone Invitational World Golf Championships event. He has moved from 159th to 33rd in the Official World Golf Rankings this year. “Hideki’s rapid rise in the world golf rankings speaks for itself,” Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil said. “His phenomenal early-season success, with two wins and two runner-up finishes in Japan combined with his impressive play in his last four events, including top 10s in the last two majors, shows what an incredible talent Hideki is, and he is a major star in Japan. He is playing like a top-10 player in the world right now, and we are thrilled that he will be with us next week at the Wyndham.” Matsuyama won the Asian Amateur Championship in 2011 and ’12 and received an invitation to play the Masters as the Asian Amateur Champion. In 2011, he finished tied for 27th and received the prestigious Silver Cup for Low Amateur; he was the only amateur to make the cut that year. He finished tied for 54th in 2012.

Harrington is a three-time major championship winner with Open Championship wins in 2007 and ’08 and a PGA Championship title 2008. A native and resident of Ireland, he is a five-time PGA TOUR winner and a 16-time international winner. He finished tied for 47th in the 2011 Wyndham, his only other appearance here. He is currently 75th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 118th in the FedExCup point standings.

Teachers representing Piedmont Triad-area kindergarten through high school institutions and one guest will receive free admission to the tournament with a current school identification card Wednesday, Aug. 14 through Sunday, Aug. 18. 2013 Wyndham Championship Youth Golf Clinic

The Wishes by Wyndham Junior Golf Clinic is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Grandover Resort practice range. This event will be conducted by The First Tee of the Triad. This clinic is open to junior golfers of all ages, and PGA TOUR professionals will provide the instruction. Refreshments will be provided, and a limited number of T-Shirts will be available. Participation is free of charge.
