Marty Sheets Named Volunteer of the Year
I am in Tucson, Arizona for the week for PGA TOUR meetings, and latertoday (4:30 Mountain Time) the PGA TOUR will be presenting theirVolunteer of the Year award.
In November, I nominated one of ourvolunteers for this award. His name is Marty Sheets, and out of all thetournaments, Marty won the prestigious Volunteer of the Year award!!!This is a neat story. Marty has been a standard bearer for 15 yearswith us, and in recent years Marty has walked with the final group.
Marty has also won the Special Olympics state golf championship manytimes. Marty has Down Syndrome, and I'm pretty sure he is around 50years old. Marty's professionalism and enthusiasm is unmatched, andthis is the first time one of our volunteers has won this award. Iwanted to share this with you before the announcement took place, and weare on top of this in regards to local media. PGA TOUR is handling the national media.
Thanks,
Mark Brazil"

Cool KGGO Item on eBay
Item number: 180086109381
"This statue was gift to players at the (Kmart) Greater Greensboro Open in 1989. It does have an artists signature along with a copyright date of 1987. I was unable to read the entire name but what I could read was "Michael Gapmo**?". Statue stands about 11 inches tall. I am not sure what it is made of but it is quite heavy, weighing over three pounds. There are a couple of flakes to the paint coating (?), the largest one can be seen in the photo of the signature on the base. Brass plate is loose on one end, but I left that in case a new owner wanted to remove it. This makes a nice display piece with golf memorabilia or it could be used as a trophy with a new engraved plate. Priority mail will be $13.50, insurance optional but highly recommended as I cannot be held responsible with how the Post Office treats the package once I mail it! No reserve."

30 Years of History
There has been a lot of discussion in our local media about the tournament returning to its "roots" and many reminders of tournaments of the past. The truth is that the Wyndham Championship has been played at Forest Oaks since 1977. That's 30 years of uninterrupted tradition. Sedgefield only hosted the event for 18 years on its own.
Don't forget:
1977 Woody Durham was the Honorary Chairman for the Greater Greensboro Open held at Forest Oaks Country Club.
1978 Seve Ballesteros won the Greater Greensboro Open at Forest Oaks Country Club.
1979 Greensboro Jaycee President Mark Schott watched Raymond Floyd comeback from behind to win the GGO at Forest Oaks.
1988 the Greater Greensboro Open enters a new era with Kmart as a sponsor and a $1,000,000 purse.
1999 was a good year at Forest Oaks for Jesper Parnevik. He had 27 birdies in that year's tournament.
The Greater Greensboro Open Blog would like to thank Forest Oaks Country Club for 30 great years.

News & Record Reports Tournament May Change Course
The foundation took over operations for the tournament last year and is on the hook for about $250,000 a year for the remaining six years of the deal. A move back to Sedgefield would be a return to the tournament's roots.
Sedgefield and Starmount Country Club shared the tournament the first 18 years starting in 1938. Sedgefield, tucked off High Point Road, became the tournament's full-time host from 1961 to 1976 before Forest Oaks took over the following year."
