Robert Bell reports "Wyndham a tougher sell in slow economy"
"A year ago, it seemed Wyndham Championship officials had to beat off sponsors with a hybrid, such was the excitement generated by the PGA Tour event's move to Sedgefield Country Club.
This year, with the eroding economy forcing local companies to scrimp and save, tournament director Mark Brazil is finding his golf tournament isn't quite as desirable. Brazil said this year's tournament will likely not sell as many secondary corporate sponsorships -- a key to any golf tournament's success -- as it did last year.
"(Sales) ain't very pretty right now," Brazil said. "Then again, the world ain't pretty right now. If we got close to last year (in sales) I'd consider it a major success."
Tournament officials secured about $2.5 million in local sponsorship last year from companies eager to be a part of the tournament's return to Sedgefield from Forest Oaks Country Club.
Brazil said many of those companies -- Harris Teeter, BB&T and VF Corp. -- agreed to multi-year contracts. But he said other companies are reluctant to renew or join until they get a feel for where the economy is going."

Losing Greensboro adds regional appeal
"For decades, rivalries have plagued the Triad. Winston-Salem versus Greensboro, Greensboro versus High Point, Forsyth County versus Guilford. The cities and counties have competed for jobs, attention, residents, money, you name it.
But the last three years, organizers of the golf tournament known most of its history as the Greater Greensboro Open have followed a path they say has led toward greater regional cooperation and bigger crowds. And all it took was a company with enough money to fill a void as title sponsor and enough vanity to want the tournament's name all to itself.
When automaker Chrysler dropped out of what was then the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, organizers got the Wyndham Worldwide hotel chain to take its place. It was willing to pony up an estimated $18 million over four years--but only if the host city's name was dropped from the tournament's name."

What's on ebay? GGO Putter Bid Starting at $52.00
"Up for auction is this new and unused Robert J. Bettinardi MC-10 putter with head cover. It is a 1/40 prototype made to commemorate Jesper Parnevik's win at the Greater Greensboro Open in 1999. This was Bettinardi's first PGA victory. The model is called 99 Putts, as that is how many Jesper used to earn his victory. The putter is 35 inches in length and has not been altered in any way. The grip is still in the factory plastic. Written on the sole is as follows... 1st Victory April 22-25 1999, 99 Putts, Milled By R.J. Bettinardi, G.G.O. There is also a great caricature of Jesper on the sole smoking his victory cigar on the 18th green. Please, contact me with any questions but do not ask me to ship outside the continental U.S. I will only ship to the lower 48. **The last photo (of the sole) makes the paintfill look like it is coming out. Let me assure you the sole is perfect.**"
