"To all former Members,
This is a follow-up statement to our previous messages to you. As stated earlier, it was never our intention to “auction” off items in the archive collection. In fact, we are trying to prepare for our 75 th anniversary coming up in 2011, and our Board of Directors is interested in preparing the Archive Room in order to display our history for our young Chapter. In order to accomplish this task, we have a lot of items to arrange and display. Items of non-historical value and duplicate items may be available in the future after the archive displays have been established. I am writing to ask for your help in helping us to showcase our history in a way that future Greensboro Jaycee members may appreciate. Kevin von der Lippe and Alexis Asher will be leading us in this endeavor. Please contact me with further questions or if you are interested in helping us to accomplish this task.
Sincerely,
Lisa Powell"

Gerald Witt Reports on Golf Auction
"When former members heard that the Jaycees were about to auction hundreds of items from the archives of the Wyndham Championship, they dug in their heels. They didn't want one-of-a-kind pewter goblets from past tournaments, old scorecards, programs, art prints and unique memorabilia to disappear.
But there aren't glass cases to differentiate between the nice stuff and the expendable things, so the auction is on hold until club historians can determine what can go.
"There's a lot of handcrafted GGO memorabilia out there," Randy Harris, a former Jaycees president and one of the main drivers behind gathering archives for the Jaycees and former Greater Greensboro Open.
"If you looked into the room it would look like a big pile of junk," Harris said. "There's so much stuff that there's no place for it."
Harris was one of the historians of the golf tournament who launched an outcry against the intentions from the Jaycees executive board to auction some of its goods, though duplicate and low-value items were proposed. Harris remembered a similar cleaning in the 1980s, he said, when minutes noting the tournament's 1938 inception were nearly thrown away.
And he'd rather not see that happen again with other historically significant memorabilia.
Until 2006 the group primarily ran the golf tournament, and offices for the current tournament are still there.
Harris and another past Jaycees president have gathered so much memorabilia that it's hard to tell what's on loan, what's valuable and what isn't.
"They recently opened a resource room and what I noticed was, stuff that they pulled out of the archives, I'm looking at one-of-a-kind items that I know came from archives," Harris said."

Letter from Kevin von der Lippe
"My agreement with the Jaycee is quite clear: I committed to create a collection of Jaycee related items in order to protect our history. When we embarked on this undertaking I was promised by the Board that the collection would be protected and cared for by the club. The Jaycees need to uphold their commitment.
In 1995 we received a letter from a WWII veteran sailor asking if we would loan their battle flag back to them for their 50th anniversary of their ship. Unfortunately, nobody in our organization knew anything about the sailors, their ship or where their flag was. Our president, Stew Mones, asked me to find out, and also look at preserving our chapter’s history. With that the Archives were born. By the way, I located the flag of the LST 559 and the next year we hosted their reunion here in Greensboro.
From the beginning, former Jaycees and Green Coaters were very hesitant about donating anything to our club because the Jaycees have a terrible track record of throwing things out. However, with the Board’s commitment in hand, I went out and personally gave my word that the Jaycees have turned over a new leaf and are dedicated to preserving their history. We ran articles in the newspaper, we appeared on television and we held a well publicized Archives Drive to help piece together our history.
For several years the Jaycees hired an archivist to help with the collection—to make sure the items were properly stored. Since the money ran out a few years ago, the collection has been stored in the closet at the top of the stairs. Up until a couple of years ago, the only keys to the office were in mine and the president’s hands.
In regards to the museum, we offered the Greensboro Historical Museum a chance to accession whatever they wanted from our collection, and they did accept a few items (a 1938 home movie of Sam Snead in the first GGO, a 1938 GGO ticket, some memorabilia regarding the LST 559 and a couple of early Jaycee items). I do not believe they are interested in anything else we have in our collection.
I am more than willing to help the Jaycees with the Archives project and I know I can speak on Randy’s behalf too.
Sincerely,
Kevin von der Lippe"

Note from 2010 Greensboro Jaycee President Lisa Powell
"Everyone,
The 2010 Jaycee Board of Directors never had any intention of selling the historical collections for the Greensboro Jaycees. We are looking to auction off items for which we have mutliple copies or items that have little or no historical value. We are going to postpone the auction and work closely with Kevin Von de Lippe and Randy Harris who are going to advise us about which items have historical value to the Greensboro Jaycees' history. I apologize for the miscommunication.
Thank you.

Archive Sale Postponed
The ggoblogger spoke to 2010 Greensboro Jaycee President Lisa Powell this evening. She stated that the archive sale planned for May 2, 2010 will be postponed until further notice.
Revels says "Memorabilia needs to be maintained"
"Alexis, I appreciate you including the old board members in the event but I must say that I am devastated that there is to even BE an auction! 40 years of historical items and we are lowering ourselves to auction the items off instead of working with the city, county or state to see if we can find somewhere to highlight all of the wonderful items we have and the long history we have shared with the
city of Greensboro in an exhibit?
I can't understand the reason WHY we feel the need to sell off these items. Are we selling the building? Are we losing our charter? Is there a reason why 40 years of history needs to be sold to strangers rather than maintained and catalogued by the organization?
And if we are in desperate need to get rid of the stuff, we have two
gentlemen who have spent their Jaycees careers highlighting and organizing
this memorabilia! Can we not offer it to Randy Harris and Kevin von der
Lippe to see if they would be willing to store and maintain the collections
until we can find a permanent site for the items!
I don't know if the current board knows this but Kevin and Randy were just called upon to exhibit their large GGO collection to the Guilford Merchants Association's
annual dinner. IT was a huge hit and I would venture to say that with the
exception of Carson Bain's collection, these gentlemen have the most
thorough collection that is organized for display. I hope that someone will
talk to them both and offer them the important pieces of this collection for
safe keeping on BEHALF of the Jaycees.
The Greensboro Jaycees have had such a rich history in Greensboro.
Generations before us planted the trees we see lining Elm and Greene
Streets. Another generation built Jaycee park as a thank you to the city.
WE've rebuilt golf courses and bought vans for disabled friends. We have
made a difference in the city and I think that the memorabilia needs to be
maintained to share that rich history with generations to come.
Just my opinion.

What's on ebay? 1978 GGO Program
"Original Greater Greensboro Open Program Book at Forest Oaks Country Club March 29 to April 2
This 104 page book has 2 autographs. I am not a golf fan so I have no clue as to who these 2 people were. Maybe you do?
Filled with vintage ads, vintage golf info, Greensboro info.
I especially like the News 2 Edge On Sports page that has photos of Charlie Harville and Johnny Phelps.
There are a couple of pages here where someone got bored and painted lipstick on some of the ladies (about 2 pages) LOL.
Spine cover and wear - in good condition, time worn but still a great collectible."
