1990 Kmart Greater Greensboro Open Champion Steve Elkington writes homophobic tweet about Michael Sam.
1990 Kmart Greater Greensboro Open Champion Steve Elkington wrote a homophobic tweet about Michael Sam. ESPN reports that Elkington posted the following on Twitter “Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine.... No one else expected to throw today.” The Twitter post has been widely viewed as a failed attempt at satire about ESPN's focus on Sam's sexuality during the NFL Combine.

"It would be unfair to overlook, merely because it did not materialize, plans which were made for the Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament. Many hours, many telephone calls, many wires, many headaches and many oaths (some blasphemous) were spent. Complications of such a nature developed that it was impossible to conduct this event. At the moment, however, I can tell you that the Greensboro Junior Chamber is high in the respect of the golfers of the PGA."

“The Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament has been discontinued for the duration. (World War Two) We are saddened by this necessity, but accept it as a minor loss in this war-torn world.”

1941
“Our biggest project of the year was the $5.000 Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament held during the month of March. This event brought national publicity to the city of Greensboro. Our gross receipts were in excess of $11,000 with a net profit of approximately $2,800. We now have about 4,000 in our Golf Tournament sinking fund, of which 3,800 is invested in Building and Lean stock. All profit from the Golf Tournament is placed in a sinking fund to cover future losses.
At out tournament this year we had the largest attendance of any golf tournament ever sanctioned by the P.G.A. Many of the leading sport writers and commentators who attended out tournament expressed the opinion that our tournament was the best that they had ever attended.
In this connection we should extend to Odell Lambeth our appreciation for his fine work as General Chairman of the tournament.”

"The chief project in March was the Second Annual Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament. This tournament is now history and about $1500.00 was realized and set aside in a trust fund to be used during next year’s tournament. This was one of the outstanding sports events of the South and the Junior Chamber of Commerce secured an abundance of favorable publicity for the city through this project."

1938
Even with the success of the first Greater Greensboro Golf Tournament, as it was called on the orange tickets, members of the Greensboro Junior Chamber’s Board doubted the tournament’s future. Smith Barrier reported that there was grave concern among the membership.
"The nightmare of going in debt with a golf tournament still existed, and Joyner remembered such an element among the Jaycees at the time: “We had a new group of officers in the Jaycees who came in sincerely and honestly feeling that a golf tournament would absolutely ruin the Junior Chamber, and it would put the chamber in disgrace and oblivion if this golf tournament were held. They actually called a meeting of the board to vote down this golf tournament, but it didn’t happen.”
An even though the first tournament failed to make a profit, it lost $314.90, it is fortunate for millions of golf fans that the Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors did continue to host the Greater Greensboro Open.
Minutes from a meeting held on April 7, 1938 by the Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors describes the organization’s decision to continue to host the event.
Several members of the Board expressed themselves as being in favor of getting in on record that the Junior Chamber of Commerce would sponsor the Golf Tournament annually. Dr. Stanford presented the following motion to the Board: It is resolved that the By-Laws of the Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce be amended by adding Article 14 to read as follows:
THAT the Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament be an annual and permanent event of the Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce.
The motion was seconded by Mr. Joyner and was passed unanimously. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
1938
“Perhaps the most outstanding project of our organization for the year of 1938 was the First Annual Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament. Archie Joyner, as chairman of the Executive Committee, did s splendid job and our entire membership is to be commended for their unselfish cooperation. Almost without exception, all professional golfers of any consequence competed. Sam Snead, the greatest money winner of the year, won the tournament and $1200.00 first prize money. The leading pros told us, and no one doubts their sincerity, that this was the finest tournament in which they had ever competed. They were very unselfish in their praise for Greensboro and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Executive Committee, with Charlie West as chairman, has already been appointed to handle the tournament for next year.”
