He graduated high school from Christ School in Arden, and obtained his business degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Always a loyal Tarheel fan, he had fun times on trips and games with friends. .In 1941, after graduation from Carolina, he married his special love, Mary Midyette, in Aurora, and they had an especially happy marriage for 52 years until her sudden death in 1994. He enlisted in the Naval Officer Training Corps and served his country as a captain aboard anti-sub ships for three years. When in the reserves, he was called back to duty during the Korean War for two additional years.Upon his return to Greensboro, he opened his insurance business, Godwin Insurance Agency, which he successfully owned for 53 years until his retirement in 1990. He was truly giving of himself and supported so many other organizations. Upon retirement, he enjoyed golf, being at his home in the mountains, dancing, UNC sports, and being with his friends and family. He always enjoyed his many years at Pamlico Beach with the "crew." He volunteered with Mobile Meals and American Red Cross Blood Center. He is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Mary Midyette Godwin, and his second wife, Hazel Swann Godwin. Godwin, and Louis' family; two stepchildren, Tom Swann and Gayle Gordon and their families; three great-grandchildren and many friends throughout the years. We will remember our "Big Pop" for his caring soul, knowing how to have fun in whatever you do, teaching us how to work and play hard, but care for others among it all. He lived each "chapter of his life" (as he would say) to its fullest, finding the best of each day. Sweet Grover, we will have you and all you taught us with us always. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Memorial Garden at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 3506 Lawndale Dr., 27408, or a charity of choice.

2014 Wyndham Championship wins two awards
The 2014 Wyndham Championship was honored by the PGA TOUR at the TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on Thursday, November 20, earning two awards for “Best Title Sponsor Integration” and “Best Social Media Activation."
“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I am delighted to congratulate the Wyndham Championship for the special recognition it has received with these two awards,” PGA TOUR executive vice-president and chief of operations Andy Pazder said. “The tournament staff should be extremely proud of its hard work and for being recognized as the best among its peers on the TOUR.”
For “Best Title Sponsor Integration”, Wyndham created a campaign that created a “last summer vacation” feel, which included a beach, a replica ski lodge equipped with a fire place, skiing simulators and the opportunity for fans to unlock prizes with room keys handed to them at the entrance. Wyndham’s charitable foundation also supported the tournament’s first foray into a Junior Golf Summit, a Birdies for Backpacks program as well as giving support to the local First Tee Chapter.
In the category of “Best Social Media Activation”, the Wyndham Championship created a social media plan that engaged and educated fans about the tournament’s 75th anniversary while creating an overarching connection with Wyndham and its family of brands to increase the visibility of the title in the social media community. The plan included an Instagram contest which began seven months in advance to generate buzz and reward one fan per week with a prize from Wyndham.
Continuing with the anniversary celebration, the Wyndham Championship released a top tournament moment in history on a daily basis for the corresponding anniversary number which concluded the day prior to play across the tournament’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
The Wyndham Championship also promoted its social media efforts with signage throughout the course, a tweet patrol and the first twitter vending machines.
“What a great honor for both Wyndham Worldwide and our local team to be recognized by the PGA TOUR and the tournaments with these two awards,” Wyndham Championship Tournament Director Mark Brazil said. “We are very fortunate to have Wyndham as our title sponsor and our partner, and the awards are evidence that Wyndham Worldwide is fully committed to making the Wyndham Championship one of the best events on the PGA TOUR.”

“We will always have the tournament”
“If we are truly going to study the history of the event, then we must be aware of our place in the timeline. Part of the reason I wanted to start the blog (Greater Greensboro Open Blog) was to connect the current Jaycee membership and leadership with the event’s rich history.
I have heard (Jaycee) leaders in the organization make foolish statements like, “We will always have the tournament” and this is simply not true.”

2007 Wyndham Champion Branndt Snedeker thinks the odds are the PGA TOUR has gay players
"But the PGA Tour remains uncharted territory for homosexuals. While women's golf has had several openly gay players through the years, the men's tour is waiting on its first. And, as Brandt Snedeker said on the upcoming season premiere of Golf Channel's "Feherty," that's probably not because of an absence of gay golfers -- just none willing to make their sexual preference public.
"I don't believe that at all," Brandt Snedeker said when host David Feherty remarked the tour doesn't have any gay players. "I don't think a gay golfer is going to be that big of a deal. It's not going to affect my life in any way shape or form."
Players on the PGA Tour tend to be conservative in their social beliefs, particularly when factoring in a healthy population of devout Christian players. But Snedeker said he would encourage a gay golfer to come out if he was ready.
'Actually if there is one, I'd welcome him to come out if he's comfortable doing it. I think it's a personal decision they need to make on their own," Snedeker said. "The fact that the tour doesn't have an openly gay player -- I don't know if there is or isn't, but odds are there probably is a gay person on the PGA Tour.'"
