Jaycee Pin Celebrates Roberts v. United States Jaycees

Roberts v. United States Jaycees

Abstract
Argument: Wednesday, April 18, 1984
Decision: Tuesday, July 3, 1984
Issues: First Amendment, Miscellaneous
Categories: freedom of association, gender

Advocates
Carl D. Hall, Jr. (Argued the cause for the appellee)
Richard L. Varco, Jr. (Argued the cause for the appellants)

Facts of the Case

According to its bylaws, membership in the United States Jaycees was limited to males between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five. Females and older males were limited to associate membership in which they were prevented from voting or holding local or national office. Two chapters of the Jaycees in Minnesota, contrary to the bylaws, admitted women as full members. When the national organization revoked the chapters' licenses, they filed a discrimination claim under a Minnesota anti-discrimination law. The national organization brought a lawsuit against Kathryn Roberts of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, who was responsible for the enforcement of the anti-discrimination law.

Question

Did Minnesota's attempts to enforce the anti-discrimination law violate the Jaycees' right to free association under the First Amendment?

Conclusion

In a unanimous decision, the Court held that the Jaycees chapters lacked "the distinctive characteristics that might afford constitutional protection to the decision of its members to exclude women." The Court reasoned that making women full members would not impose any serious burdens on the male members' freedom of expressive association. The Court thus held that Minnesota's compelling interest in eradicating discrimination against women justified enforcement of the state anti-discrimination law. The Court found that the Minnesota law was not aimed at the suppression of speech and did not discriminate on the basis of viewpoint.

Robert Bell Reports "Wyndham's Sales Are Up"

"Two months after announcing the change of address, tournament officials say corporate sponsorship sales -- the driving force behind any PGA Tour event's success -- are up 30 percent from this time a year ago.

That's despite a 10- to 20-percent price increase for suites, skyboxes and tents.
Tournament director Mark Brazil said returning the Wyndham to its roots -- Sedgefield shared or hosted the event for 26 years before the tournament moved to Forest Oaks in 1977 -- has created a stir not just in locker rooms but boardrooms as well.
Brazil and tournament officials are conservatively estimating that come August, hospitality sales will surpass $2.4 million. That would be at least a 33 percent spike compared to last year's sales of $1.8 million.

"We're seeing a lot of interest we haven't seen before," said Brazil. "A big part of that is the move. It's something that has a lot of people excited.""

Greensboro Junior Woman's Club Celebrate "Southern Hospitality" for Camp Carefree

"On Saturday, April 26, the Greensboro Junior Woman's Club will host its annual fundraiser. This year’s event invites you to celebrate "Southern Hospitality" and help raise money for Camp Carefree.

Since (Amy Collins Moore) turned 40 in January - this will be her last event and (she would) really love to have as much support as possible for Camp Carefree. The gala starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamesford Meadows Clubhouse and features silent and live auctions, dinner, drinks, music and dancing.

Emcees for the evening will Jeff Wicker and the crew from The Wicker Show on 98.7 Simon. Dress is snappy casual. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $30 each. We have some great items. I am attaching the flyer - it's a big file so hopefully Since 1986, Camp Carefree has provided a free, one-week camping experience for youngsters from North Carolina and neighboring states with specific health problems and disabilities.

The program also includes camps for well siblings of chronically ill or disabled children and a week for those with a disabled or a seriously ill parent. Additionally, Sickle Cell Anemia Camp and weekend retreats for Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Brain Injury Association, Hospice, Cub Scouts and many church youth groups are held here.

Other organizations rent the camp throughout the year for retreats, seminars, conferences and reunions. The Junior Woman’s Club wanted to focus its efforts this year on a local organization that touches the lives of many – Camp Carefree was a natural fit. Established more than 75 years ago, the GJWC provides women between the ages of 21-45 the opportunity to volunteer in and around Guilford County.

The club has started and maintained many educational, healthcare, conservation, and public affairs programs. You will see Junior volunteers at Crop Walk, the Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run and Operation Smile, to name a few. The Club has a partnership with The Women’s Hospital of Greensboro, in which we assist with a variety of projects - NICU Reunion and conducts two Super Sitter babysitting workshops each year.

To purchase a ticket - just let me know. OR if you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation or purchasing raffle tickets - they are 1 for $1 or 6 for $5 - it's for a split the pot. It's a great way to help out and you don't have to be present to win.

Please email or call (Amy Collins Moore) at 334-5889 (work) or 643-0098 (home) if you can help out. I hope I can count on your support. Hope you can come to the event - it would be fun to catch up with everyone!"

2007 Wyndham Championship Champion Brandt Snedeker

Reports Say "Brandt Snedeker nearly wore out his welcome at Augusta National"

"Once invites for the Masters go out, players are allowed to play as many practice rounds as they want and Snedeker took full advantage of that privilege before his debut back in 2004.
And then some.

"I was out of school, had not turned pro yet," he said. "They almost changed the rule the next year because of me, because I was down here every day. I wore it out. I thought, 'How many times can I have a membership at Augusta National for four months?'" "It kind of feels more like a home event for me," Snedeker said.

Snedeker earned his first trip to the Masters three years ago after winning the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship. He was already somewhat familiar with Augusta National, having played it once a year with the rest of the Vanderbilt team. Once he got his official invite, though, he practically took up residence.

He'd pile into his car Thursday for the 5½-hour drive, and get in two rounds before dark. Then he'd play another two rounds Friday. By the time the tournament rolled around, he had played 40 to 50 rounds.

It paid off when he made the cut, finished tied for 41st, and turned pro the next day."

What's on eBay? 1979 GGO Decanter

"Great Collectible Piece commemorating the "Greater Greensboro Open 1979" golf tournament held in Greensboro, North Carolina. This "Caddy in the Rain" whiskey decanter shows the GGO logo on the front base, on the back base it says The Greater Greensboro Open 1938-1979. The decanter still has the paper tax strip attached to the back.

The letter GGO are carved into the back of the caddy's shirt. The bottom of the decanter is signed Daviess County Liquor Bottle 1979 with an R in a circle. This piece is exceptionally well detailed down to the removable caddy's cap (lid) and the look on the caddy's face is priceless. Great Addition to your vintage whiskey decanter or Golf memorabilia collection. Piece is in mint condition, with no cracks, chip or any damage of any kind."

2007 Wyndham Championship Champion Brandt Snedeker

Brandt Snedeker, the winner of the inaugural Wyndham Championship was also named the 2007 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year. The Wyndham Championship was Snedeker’s first PGA TOUR victory.

He has been playing so well this week at The Masters that the ggoblogger thought he would rerun a few photos of Brandt standing around with the other guys with green coats. (Maybe this will bring him some good luck.)

Has anyone else noticed that every time the announcers for The Masters mention Snedeker's 2007 victory they always say he won in Greensboro? They say he won at Greensboro, not he won the Wyndham Championship. And to think, we all thought taking Greensboro out of the title would make people forget the tournament was held in Greensboro.
