Billy Horschel and Hideki Matsuyama will play 2015 Wyndham Championship

Billy Horschel and Hideki Matsuyama will play the 2015 Wyndham Championship set for Aug. 17-23, 2015 at Sedgefield Country Club. Horschel won the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship to claim the 2014 FedExCup championship and its $10 Million prize. This season, his best finishes are third at the Valero Texas Open and tied for seventh at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Horschel is 20th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 45th FedExCup point standings; he is making his fourth Wyndham Championship appearance. Matsuyama will make his third-consecutive Wyndham Championship appearance this year; he missed the cut last year but finished 15th in 2013. Matsuyama won the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance last year; he has four top-five finishes this year including a fifth-place showing at the Masters tournament. He is 15th in the Official Golf World Rankings and 16th in the current FedExCup point standings.

BB&T Executive Steve Wiggs Named 2015 Wyndham Championship Honorary Chairman

Steve Wiggs, BB&T senior executive vice president, chief marketing officer and lending group manager, is the 2015 Wyndham Championship honorary chairman. The 76th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 16-23, 2015. As the honorary chairman, Wiggs will serve as an ambassador for the PGA TOUR event which provides important economic and charitable benefits for the Piedmont Triad region. As the Wyndham Championship has evolved, the honorary chairmen have led the charge to promote Piedmont Triad regionalism through the PGA TOUR event. Wiggs, a native of Kinston, N.C., began his banking career in 1979 when he joined BB&T. He graduated from BB&T’s Management Development Program in 1980. He has served in the following roles: business services officer in Goldsboro, Beaufort and Morehead City, N.C.; area loan administrator in New Bern, N.C.; city executive of Cary and Greensboro, N.C.; and regional president of the Catawba Valley and Piedmont Regions; and manager of BB&T’s Wealth Management Division. In 2003, Wiggs joined BB&T’s executive management team. He was named as the Corporation’s first chief marketing officer in February 2005 and assumed responsibilities for the Lending Group in 2009.

Sifford's son charged with stealing more than $1M from him

"The son and ex-daughter-in-law of late black golf pioneer Charlie Sifford were indicted Tuesday on charges they stole more than $1 million from him. Sifford in 1961 became the first black golfer to earn full-time playing privileges on the PGA Tour, paving the way for minorities to compete at the sport's highest level. Craig and Sandra Sifford stole the money from him over a four-year period starting in 2010 and spent it on travel, dining, clothes, jewelry and landscaping, the state attorney general's office and the county prosecutor's office said. Craig and Sandra Sifford, who divorced a few months ago, were charged in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court with crimes including theft, money laundering and unauthorized use of property. Defending Champion Camilo Villegas, Davis Love III, Carl Pettersson and K.J. Choi Join 2015 Wyndham Championship Field

Colombian PGA TOUR golfer Camilo Villegas will defend his 2014 Wyndham Championship title, and several other former champions will also play the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR. The 76th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 17-23, 2015 at Sedgefield Country Club. Joining Villegas in the field are two-time champion Davis Love III, 2008 winner Carl Pettersson, 2005 champion K.J. Choi and 2010 winner Arjun Atwal. These players join World Golf Hall of Famer Ernie Els, 2007 champion Brandt Snedeker, 2011 champion Webb Simpson and 2011 FedExCup champion Bill Haas in the field. Villegas took a one-stroke victory over Hass and Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson in the 75th anniversary Wyndham Championship last year. It was his fourth-career PGA TOUR victory and his seventh overall. Villegas will make his sixth Wyndham Championship appearance this year including each of the last five tournaments. Two-time winner Davis Love III will make his 21st Wyndham Championship appearance this year; he is third in all-time money at the Wyndham with $1,541,256. The 1992 and 2006 winner recently returned to the PGA TOUR after recovering from foot surgery on April 1; because of his injury, he is 182nd in the current FedExCup point standings. Love made his first start on the Champions Tour in January, and after returning from foot surgery, he finished tied for fifth at the Principal Charity Classic Champions Tour event. He has 20 PGA TOUR victories. Pettersson, the tournament’s all-time money leader with $1,754,594 in Wyndham winnings, won the Wyndham in 2008, the first event after the tournament’s return to Sedgefield Country Club, and in the process, reset most of the tournament scoring records. The NC State University alumnus and former Greensboro resident set marks for low 18 holes (61), low second round (61), low 36-hole total (125), low 54-hole total (191) and low 72-hole total (259, -21). Despite a missed cut at the Open Championship, Pettersson is finding his game of late; he finished fifth at the recent Travelers Championship. He is 88th in the current FedExCup point standings. The Grimsley High School alumnus will make his 13th consecutive Wyndham Championship appearance this year; in addition to his 2008 victory, he recorded top-five finishes in 2007, ’11 and ’12. Choi won in 2005 when he took a two-stroke victory over Shigeki Maruyama; he will be making his ninth appearance here and is seventh on the tournament’s all-time money winner’s list with $1,329,936. He finished tied for 37th in 2013, his most recent Wyndham Championship appearance. A native of Korea and Texas resident, Choi has eight PGA TOUR wins and nine additional international victories. His most recent PGA TOUR victory was the 2011 Players Championship.

Ernie Els and Brandt Snedeker Join 2015 Wyndham Championship Field

Ernie Els and 2007 Wyndham Championship winner Brandt Snedeker will play the 2015 Wyndham Championship. The 76th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 17-23, 2015 at Sedgefield Country Club. Els is a four-time major winner having won the U.S. Open in 1994 and ’97 and the Open Championship in 2002 and ’12; he has 19 PGA TOUR wins and 47 international wins. He has played in eight President’s Cup matches, nine Dunhill Cup matches and five World Cup matches. A native of South Africa, Els is 116th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 181st in the FedExCup point standings. He is a member of the 2011 World Golf Hall of Fame class. Els will make his fifth Wyndham Championship appearance; his best finish here came in 1997 when he finished tied for seventh. Snedeker won the 2007 Wyndham Championship and was named 2007 PGA TOUR rookie of the year. The 2012 FedExCup champion has seven PGA TOUR wins and nine overall. He is currently 11th in the FedExCup point standings and 29th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Snedeker will be making his ninth-consecutive Wyndham Championship appearance; in addition to his 2007 win, he recorded top-eight finishes here in 2009, ’10 and ‘14.

“BIRDIES FORE BACKPACKS” RETURNS AS WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP OFFICIAL CHARITY

“Birdies Fore Backpacks,” the program launched in 2014 to fight childhood food insecurity in the Piedmont Triad returns for a second run as the Wyndham Championship’s official charity this year.During its inaugural run last year, Birdies Fore Backpacks raised nearly $200,000 to help feed hungry children in the Piedmont Triad region.

Webb Simpson and Bill Haas will play 2015 Wyndham Championship

Wake Forest alumni Webb Simpson and Bill Haas will play in the 2015 Wyndham Championship along with the Wake Forest University golf coach, Jerry Haas. The 76th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 17-23, 2015 at Sedgefield Country Club. Webb Simpson won his first-career PGA TOUR victory at the Wyndham in 2011. The Raleigh native will be making his seventh-consecutive Wyndham Championship appearance; he finished tied for fifth last year. Haas finished tied for second at last year’s 75th anniversary Wyndham Championship finishing one stroke behind winner Camilo Villegas. The 2011 FedExCup champion won the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation earlier this year; it was his sixth PGA TOUR victory. Haas made his first PGA TOUR start at the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event in 2002 when he was still in school at Wake Forest. Since then, Haas has played the Wyndham in each of the last nine years. Haas’ uncle, Jerry, who is also the Wake Forest University men’s golf coach, will play the Wyndham Championship this year as the Carolinas PGA Section champion. It will be his fourth appearance in the tournament.
