Venerable Greensboro Tourney Plans 62nd Outing

"Before becoming co-ed, the Jaycees had a women’s group called the Jaycettes. When that sub-organization was dissolved in 1985, Patty Rumpf became a member of the Greensboro Jaycees when it opened its doors to the distaff set. With a long list of awards to her credit, Patty was named a Greensboro Jaycee Life Member in 1993."

"She has made her way gloriously through the ranks to this big year when she has become the 2000 General Chairman of the GGCC. "It is the opportunity of a lifetime and the perfect culmination of my Jaycee career," Patty says."

"This GGCC is the largest Jaycee project in the world and Patty says, "The sheer size and complexities in coordinating a major sporting event, along with the camaraderie and teamwork amongst the volunteers, are what interested me in the organization." The event has raised millions of dollars for charity and community service projects."

Mark Brazil Interviewed on FM Talk 101.1-Brad and Britt Show

Mark Brazil, Chrysler Classic of Greensboro's Tournament Director, was interviewed on FM Talk 101.1- the Brad and Britt show with Brad Krantz and Britt Whitmire.

The interview took place on 4/25/05 and began with questions about the recently reported PGA TOUR concerns about the CCG's low TV ratings.

"The story is about five weeks old", Brazil told the morning team. He said that the PGA TOUR had expressed concerns at the Player's Championship and that it has just taken our local media this long to catch up to the story.

The spot turned into a very lighthearted, softball pitch interview. At one point Brad suggested the the tournament use topless standard bearers to help improve ratings. (Mark played a long.)

Brad also told a story about a perfect drive he hit in a Pro-Am once when paired with John Daly.

Brad and Britt both were very supportive of the CCG and said it was a civic event, not unlike the furniture market, that holds this community together.

(2003) CCG Fits in Fall by John Hammer

This excerpt was taken from the Rhino Times web page to read the entire article go to: http://greensboro.rhinotimes.com/archives/102303/story01.html

"The new fall GGO, properly known as the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, was bigger and better than any fall golf tournament in Greensboro. The tournament was not bigger and better than any tournament in Greensboro’s history, but it certainly was bigger and better than the last couple of Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classics, which is what the GGO was called most recently when it was played in the spring before it was moved to the fall and became the CCG."

"Also, you can’t get away from the fact that there is a lot more sports competition in the fall. Sunday there was a NASCAR race at Martinsville, and the Panthers played at home. Saturday there was the usual spate of college football games, and then there is the World Series. But despite all of that competition, the golf tournament had good galleries. People seemed excited about the fall date and interested in seeing the new course. "

"Considering all that has been done since the last tournament the Jaycees deserve a huge round of applause. Following the spring 2002 tournament, the Jaycees decided to have the Forest Oaks course redesigned, and it was completed in time for this tournament. It was no small feat just getting the course ready, but everything was a little bit different, and some things a lot different because this tournament was in the fall, not the spring."

"I ran into Gene Shanks, the 2005 Jaycee president, near the clubhouse on Sunday, and he said Jaycee membership had increased for the last couple of months, which is really good news. What seems strange to me is that it is 2003 and the Jaycees have already elected their 2005 president. "

"I think this must have been a first for the tournament formerly known as the GGO. After Shigeki Maruyama won, and before he got the check for $810,000 and the new Chrysler Crossfire, he did a television interview for Japanese television, and all of us monoglot American reporters hung around and wondered what he was saying. I don’t know what he said, but he must be a funny guy, because all of the Japanese camera crews were laughing.

When he did his interview in the press tent later, he used an interpreter for his answers, but he didn’t need to have the questions interpreted. He also got in a couple of funny one-liners in English.

His English appears to be pretty good; he just isn’t comfortable doing an interview alone when it is being taped and people are writing down every word he says. But he did describe his round in English, with some help on distances from the interpreter and a lot of body English.
He said a couple of weeks ago that he was trying to make sure he finished in the top 125. Now he’s hoping to finish in the top 30.

It was different to see waves of Japanese spectators in the galleries. "

"Riding the shuttle back to the parking lot Sunday evening, I rode with News & Record reporter Jim Schlosser. I don’t want to get Jim in trouble with his bosses by complimenting him, but he has an encyclopedic memory. I commented on the weather and how I remember being out there in the snow. Jim started talking about the first tournament he attended in 1953 and how there was a four-way tie for first, so they played 18 holes on Monday, and there was still a two-way tie. He, of course, was giving names and scores. I’m hoping I got the year right.
Then he started talking about the last tournament at Starmount Country Club, which was in 1960, and about a player being so cold he wore an overcoat between shots. "

"Overall this year it looks like the Jaycees are turning the corner. The course, the tournament, the attitude – all have improved tremendously from 2002.

Greensboro’s leaders have expressed a lot of interest in young professionals, and at one time the Greensboro Jaycees was the largest and richest organization of young professionals in the country. It should be a natural fit."

Low TV ratings could threaten Chrysler Classic

"The event could still get caught up in a ratings-based decision, however. CBS, ABC and NBC are the Tour's network television partners, and ESPN, USA and The Golf Channel also carry events, usually on weekdays. Networks just finished negotiating television contracts with the National Football League, and Crosby said those and other sports-league contracts will help determine television deals for the PGA Tour. FM Talk 101.1 WZTK Reports "Possible Changes For Popular Local PGA Tournament"

"Could the future of the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro be in doubt? PGA Tour officials say they plan to restructure the tour schedule because fall events are having trouble competing in the TV ratings against college and pro football.

That means the CCG could be moved back to spring or possibly done away with altogether. Tournament director Mark Brazil doesn't really expect that to happen, though, because Chrysler is the largest sponsor on the tour and the CCG has such a rich tradition in this area.

The Chrysler Classic is locked into its fall time slot through next year."

Biggest Point of Leverage for the CCG

Our local new station WFMY recently reported that there was a "looming" danger that Greensboro and the Greensboro Jaycees would lose the tournament. When asked for a response, tournament director, Mark Brazil was quoted as saying "the biggest point of leverage for the CCG is its rich 67-year history and its title sponsor Chrysler. Chrysler is the largest sponsor on the tour."

While I think that was a great quote and it probably made a lot of people feel better, I do feel the need to point out two things.

Chrysler can drop the Greensboro event and still maintain its standing as the largest sponsor on the TOUR.

The second thing that I think should be pointed out is that history does not mean the same thing to the PGA TOUR as it does to this community. Just review the article in the June 2004 Golf Digest entitled "History for sale: keeping track of the old days isn't what it used to be" by John Fienstein.

To read the entire article go to:
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0HFI/is_6_55/ai_n6106119

Please read the following excerpt to gain a better understanding of how the TOUR values history.

"Let's take the charade a step further and test Finchem.

Question: What PGA Tour event did Sam Snead win eight times?

Finchem's answer: "The Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic."

Wrong, commissioner! Even you can't keep track of the tour's name game. In 2003 what had been the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic became the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro. No doubt if Slammin' Sammy were still alive he would be at Finchem's doorstep demanding a Chrysler for each of those eight victories.

"OK, then," Finchem says just a bit sheepishly. "He won the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro eight times." He pauses and then adds, "That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.""

WFMY Reports "A Looming Shake Up on PGA TOUR"

"PGA restructuring could move the tournament back to the spring, or worse, cut the tourney all together.

Greensboro, NC -- There are questions about the future of the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.A looming shake up on the PGA tour could drive the tournament back to the spring, or worse, cancel the 67-year Classic all together.

PGA officials are in the process of restructuring the tour because some fall events, like the CCG, are not up to par in the TV ratings against football.Since getting word of the possible rescheduling, CCG representatives have been in constant communication with the PGA.

"I can't ever say I'm 100% about anything. You know, crossing the road right now, I'm not positive I'm gonna make it. But I'm as confident as possible that we're not gonna be cut from any schedule," says CCG Director Mark Brazil.

Brazil says the biggest point of leverage for the CCG is its rich 67-year history and its title sponsor Chrysler. Chrysler is the largest sponsor on the tour.Brazil says the tournament is locked in to its fall time slot at least through 2006."

"A Brewing Storm? by John Hawkins-Golf World

"Some will tell you the same about a 40-event schedule. Beyond the fiscal implications, the tour is very proud of its charity commitments and civic impact in smaller markets such as Greensboro, N.C., San Antonio and western Pennsylvania. Those tournaments may not make money for the networks, but they're important to the people who attend them and play in them. "Is it necessary to have the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro or Chrysler Championship [in Tampa] if you know Tiger and Ernie aren't going to show up, but $1 million still goes to charity?" said Brad Faxon. "How can you say that's bad?""

New from the Start by Todd Graff

"Some of the course’s most substantial changes unfold over the first three holes, including the flip-flopping of the first green and second tee. The changes deliver a quick and clear message that the site of the PGA Tour’s Chrysler Classic of Greensboro in October has moved away from the push-up greens and the litany of monotonous par-4s."
