Where Are They Now? Jason "Caesar" Wolff

Friends of the Wyndham Championship will remember Jason Wolff as the 1997-98 Membership Vice President of the Greensboro Jaycees. The ggoblogger was reading the Thursday, December 27, 2007 issue of The Rhinoceros Times and spotted Capt. Wolff on page 46 of the "Rhinos Around the World".

The ggoblogger would like to thank Jason for his service and we wish him well in the new year.

What's on eBay?-1975 GGO Decanter

The ggoblogger came across this decanter listed in the Greensboro section of eBay and had to stop and think about the loss of Larry Heath. Larry was the 1975 Greater Greensboro Open General Chairman that we lost on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. The ggoblogger can not look at this decanter and not think about how proud Larry was of the tournament and his involvement over the years. It's hard to believe that his GGO was 32 years ago. We miss you larry.
"(You're) bidding on a nice collectible decanter..No chips or cracks.Just a little dusty from setting on a shelf for about 25 years and needs a little cleaning.Empty.Buyer to pay shipping.12.00 insured in the CONT US to a physical address.Anywhere else higher. We combine on shipping

Congratulations Tina and Pat

It is certainly not the intention of the ggoblogger to turn the Greater Greensboro Open Blog into some sort of wedding page. Having said that, it seemed unfair to showcase Siri and Kevin's wedding a couple of weeks ago and not mention Tina Hawkins and Patrick Carbone's wedding day.

Tina and Pat were married on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Mayodan Moravian Church in Mayodan, North Carolina. The wedding included the music of Elvis Presley as it was played during the Bride's Processional.

Friends of the Wyndham Championship will remember Tina from her many tournament chairmanships. She also served for several years on the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Jaycees.

Many of the friends Tina made during those Jaycee years were able to attend and there were no less than five past Greensboro Jaycee Presidents at the event.

What's on eBay?-1995 KGGO Program

"This lot item up for bids is a program from the PGA. THe 57th Championship of the K-Mart Greater Greensboro Open at Forest Oaks Country Club. April 17th - 23rd in 1995. The cover has a great color photo of the late Byron Nelson( he passed away in 1994). Inside there are over 350 color pages of pictures and facts about the tournament and its history. The program is mint in condition. This was the last year the tournament was called the K-Mart Greater Greensboro and the champion in 1995 was Jim Gallagher Jr."

Item number: 130174280671

This is the portion of the post where the ggoblogger reminds you to read the item descriptions carefully. While it's true that the tournament was last called the KGGO back in 1995, Lord Byron passed away on Sept. 26, 2006 at the age of 94 and not in 1994.

If You've Ever Wondered What Happens After the Last Putt Drops Read This

Brandt Snedeker Blog
Aug. 21, 2007

"It was kind of a whirlwind Sunday night after I won. The CEO of Wyndham was flying back here to New York, and he was kind enough to hold his plane for me and my caddie. We even had a police escort to the airport. All of a sudden, there I was in a police car -- for a good thing, of course -- so that was pretty unbelievable. It just all happened so quickly.

We were on that plane so fast and got up here so quick and it didn't really have time to sink in. I barely got a chance to talk to my parents and my girlfriend back home. Everybody was still in tears, just hooting and hollering, and being, you know, yahoos, like they tend to be. So it was definitely fun, but nothing crazy. I didn't really celebrate or anything. I just went to bed early. I didn't realize how tired I was. I got up here around 9 o'clock and was in bed by 9:30. It was definitely an exhausting day -- but the kind of day I could get used to."

Greater Greensboro Open Blog Nonsequitur

"In August, the South Carolina Parks and Recreation Foundation renamed its public golf-training center in Columbia after Rep. James Clyburn (D., S.C.), the House Democratic whip and an avid golfer. The center, which includes a driving range and putting and chipping practice greens, went so far as to erect a statue of Clyburn in front of its main building. (Their website features http://clyburngolfcenter.com/InstallationofStatue/content/index.html a 25-photo slideshow on the statue’s installation.) According to the city of Columbia’s website, the newly rededicated golf center "will not only focus on honoring Congressman James E. Clyburn, but it will also allow our community to highlight his many contributions to our city, our region, and our state."

Three months after being thus honored, Clyburn quietly requested the $3 million in Department of Defense funds for "First Tee," a youth program of which the center is the local host. Neither house of Congress voted on this earmark when the bill first passed earlier this year, as Clyburn had not requested any money at that point. He instead inserted the money for First Tee into the conference report (the final version) of the Defense Appropriations bill (it appears on page 207 of this 621-page pdf document http://www.rules.house.gov/110/text/110_hr3222crtxt.pdf.
Clyburn's spokeswoman, Kristie Greco, said the earmark had nothing to do with the Clyburn Center or its recent dedication. "This does not relate to a golf center in Columbia," she said. "It’s a program he supports and believes in."

She said that the funds are for First Tee to conduct its program for children of servicemembers all over the nation - hence its inclusion in the Operations and Maintenance Defense-Wide (OMDW) title of the Defense Appropriations bill.

"It’s to fund the program at military installations, for children," said Greco. "It builds life-skills. They learn setting goals and reaching them, sportsmanship, etiquette.""

What's on eBay? A Complete Set of GGO Decanters

If you've ever wanted a complete set of those smelly old bottles, here is your chance.

"Offered here is a very rare complete collection of Greater Greensboro Open (GGO) Whiskey Decanters. These were made in 1972-1982 to commerate the annual golf classic held in Greensboro, North Carolina, which later changed it's name to the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic (GGCC) and then to something else (Wyndham Championship). These bottles are hardly ever seen offered for sale, and when they are they are usually priced between 30-100 dollars EACH!! Here you are bidding on the complete collection, eleven total bottles. The breakdown as follows....
1972 Bottle (First) is green and gold. Hertitage China. Erza Brooks Whiskey. This is an empty bottle with the original tax stamp still intact as well as all the stickers. It is MINT

1973 Bottle is almost 18 inches tall and depicts a golfer putting. Yellow, brown and green. Also Heritage china and also Erza Brooks. Bottle is still full and all the stickers and tax stamps are intact. Of course, it will have to be emptied prior to shipment. (Unless you are local and come pick this collection up!!) This bottle is MINT

1974 Bottle is Heritage China, also Erza Brooks. Shaped like the state of North Carolina. Tax stamp and all stickers are intact, this is also a full bottle. Taped to the underside is the ABC store recipt where it was purchased back in 1974. This bottle is MINT

1975 Bottle is Heritage China, also Erza Brooks and also still full. Yellow and green, shaped like a trophy. All stamps and seals are intact, this one is MINT also

1976 Bottle is Royal Halburton China, Old Mr Boston Whiskey. All the stamps and stickers are intact and the bottle is full. Shaped like a golf bag with clubs up top. Mint as well

1977 Bottle Heritage China and Erza Brooks Whiskey. Also full with all stamps and stickers intact. Shaped like a gold ball with a club behind it. MINT

1978 Bottle is Royal Halburton China and Old Mr Boston Whiskey. Also full with all stamps and stickers intact. Shaped like a golf shoe, 14 inches tall. MINT

1979 Bottle is Daviess County. This is also a tall bottle and depicts a caddie holding his hand out. Very rare to find one perfect like this one as the hand breaks very easily. Bottle is full with all stamps and seals intact. It is PERFECT

1980 Bottle is Daviess Country and is shaped like a golf cart. Bottle is full with all stamps and seals intact. MINT

1981 Bottle is Old Hickory Whiskey. All stamps and seals intact and bottle is full. As with the others, this one is MINT

1982 and final Bottle is yellow and green and shaped like a fairway. This one is empty with no stickers. Again, it is MINT

PLEASE NOTE, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, these bottles will all be emptied before they are shipped. They CANNOT be shipped with the whiskey in them. If you pick them up locally you can have it!! "

What's on eBay? 1977 GGO Decanter

Even though the ggoblogger has nothing to do with the sale of these decanters on eBay occasionally he will contact the sellers to correct some of their GGO history. Originally this bottle was listed as a Jim Beam decanter. The ggoblogger sent the seller a kind note letting them know that it was in fact an Ezra Brooks issues, see sticker in photo, and in fact not a Jim Beam bottle. Jim Beam did not produce a collectible decanter for the Greater Greensboro Open between the years 0f 1972-1981.

"Ezra Brooks GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN 40TH FOREST OAKS SWING INTO SPRING 1938-1977 GOLFING DECANTER
It measures approx 9" tall. and approx. 7" wide at the widest point.
There are no chips or cracks.
Buyer to prepay with papal, money order or cashier's check and to include $9.95 for shipping/handling. Insurance is available for an additional 1.65."

What's on eBay? Jim Melvin

Instead of spreading rumors about the Wyndham Championship moving-the ggoblogger wanted to make sure everyone was aware that Three Time Green Coater Jim Melvin is available on eBay.

"This is a limited edition Greensboro Grasshoppers Bobble Head featuring former Greensboro Mayor Jim Melvin. Mint condition in its original box. A great collectible for people interested in North Carolina sports and history. "

What's on eBay? 1985 Greater Greensboro Open Season Pass

"Hello, up for auction is a Greater Greensboro Open season pass badge for the year 1985. This badge is silver in color with white bordering all the way around. All words are in red and it says the following: "GGO GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN-1985 SEASON PASS NO REFUNDS" Measures approx. 3" all around. This is a really nice badge and they no longer call this event Greater Greensboro Open, it is called something else, so in the not to distant future, this is going to be a rare collectible (to some it already is!!)."

Item number: 330165396767

(The ggoblogger likes to keep his reader(s) up to date on what is available on eBay. The ggoblogger is not selling these items, jut making you aware of them. This blogger also gets a kick out of the descriptions.)

Larry Heath Remembered

This is the ggoblogger's favorite photo of Larry Heath. He is seen here with the 1975 Greater Greensboro Open Hostesses.

Larry Heath

The ggoblogger took this photo of Larry Heath on May 12, 2007. Larry had just come off the golf course and was still wearing his Chrysler Classic of Greensboro golf shirt when he sat down to tell a few GGO stories. The ggoblogger has been working on a history of the GGO commemorative decanters and wanted to ask the 1975 GGO General Chairman a few questions. Larry is seen here with his gold-sprayed 1975 GGO decanter.

Larry Heath

It is with great sadness that this blog reports the passing of 1975 Greater Greensboro Open General Chairman and 2004 Green Coat Club President Larry Heath. Larry died after a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer discovered tournament week this year. No one believed in the ideals of the Jaycees and loved the tournament more than Larry and he will be sorely missed.

Details will be forwarded once arrangements are completed. Please keep Glenda and the family in your thoughts and prayers.
