PGA Tour institutes fan-friendly phone policy

Spectators are now allowed to take photos and videos of on-course action during PGA Tour events, it was announced this week. The shift in policy begins with The Northern Trust, the first FedExCup Playoff event. Previously, spectators at Tour events could take photos and videos during practice rounds. They can now do so during regular tournament day and share on social media platforms. Live streaming and shot-by-shot coverage, however, is still not allowed. The new policy states phones must be on silent at all times and flash is not allowed. The European Tour is also instituting a new phone policy, similar to the PGA Tour’s, which it has been experimenting with the past few months. This plaque dedicated to the life and times of Arnold Palmer was unveiled at the 2017 Wyndham Championship on Tuesday and on Thursday a mysterious gentleman was seen placing these thirteen cans of “Arnold Palmer” on top of the tournament’s Wall of Fame. (An Arnold Palmer is a beverage of iced tea and lemonade, named after American golfer Arnold Palmer.)

Wyndham Championship Unveils Wall of Champions Plaque in Memory of Arnold Palmer

Arnold Palmer played a significant role in Wyndham Championship history, and a plaque in his memory was unveiled on the tournament’s “Wall of Champions” behind the ninth green at Sedgefield Country Club with Palmer’s grandson, Sam Saunders was in attendance. Official tournament play in the 78th annual Wyndham Championship begins Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club. The plaque reads: “Widely considered the most important figure in golf and one of the most influential players in Wyndham Championship history, Arnold Palmer had five top-five appearances in 13 appearances at Sedgefield. In 1963, Palmer established the Buddy Worsham Memorial Scholarship at Wake Forest University in memory of his friend & teammate who dies in a car accident while in school. Since that time, scholarship winners have been a consistent presence in the tournament field, always with great appreciation and admiration for Arnie.” Palmer recorded five top-five finishes in 13 appearances at Sedgefield Country Club. His contributions to the Wyndham Championship, then known as the Greater Greensboro Open, went far beyond what he accomplished on the Donald Ross gem at Sedgefield. He helped the tournament in securing celebrities to play in the Wednesday pro-am and once cashed in a personal favor to bring Bob Hope to town. And in more recent years, when the Wyndham Championship returned to Sedgefield after a 31-year absence, Palmer participated in a special opening ceremony.

Kevin Kisner Joins 2017 Wyndham Field

Kevin Kisner will play next week’s Wyndham Championship. The 78th annual Wyndham Championship begins 8/14 at Sedgefield Country Club. Kisner has had an excellent season so far winning the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, finishing second at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, tied for fourth at the Sony Open in Hawaii, tied for sixth at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide and tied for 10th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The Aiken, S.C., native and resident will make his fifth Wyndham Championship appearance next week; he finished tied for eighth in 2014 and tied for 10th last year. He was the first player in University of Georgia history to be named All-American four times.

K.J. Choi to play 2017 Wyndham Championship

South Korean superstar K.J. Choi, who won the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event in 2005, will also make his 10th Wyndham Championship appearance next week. Choi has eight PGA TOUR victories and nine international wins to his credit. When Si Woo Kim claimed his first PGA TOUR victory in last year’s Wyndham Championship, he mentioned Choi, arguably the most successful professional golfer in Korean history, as one of his heroes. After his 2005 victory here, Choi donated $90,000, 10 percent of his winner’s check, to the Greensboro Korean Presbyterian Church he attended while in town. Following his win at the 2011 PLAYERS Championship, he donated $200,000 to help victims of the tornados that ravaged the southeastern United States in April of that year.

2017 Wyndham Championship offers free admission for Teachers and First Responders

Multiple Wyndham Championship sponsors are combining to provide free admission to teachers and First Responders. The 78th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 14-20 at Sedgefield Country Club. Thanks to generous sponsorship from the Weaver and Bryan Foundations, teachers representing Piedmont Triad-area kindergarten through high school institutions and one guest will receive free admission to the Wyndham Championship Wednesday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 20. Teachers need only show a current school identification card to receive complimentary admission for themselves and a guest. The Carroll Companies and Bee Safe Storage and Wine Cellars make it possible for Piedmont Triad first responders, including law enforcement, fire and Emergency Medical Technicians, to be admitted to the tournament free of charge with one guest by showing a current identification card Wednesday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 20. As always at the Wyndham, children ages 15 and under are admitted free of charge with a paying adult.

Uber at the 2017 Wyndham Championship

The 2017 Wyndham Championship and Uber are joining to offer golf fans access to a safe transportation option throughout the 78th annual Wyndham Championship. With Uber, the Wyndham Championship’s ride-sharing app of choice, tournament patrons can use the Uber app to request a ride to drop them off at a designated Uber Lot near the tournament entrance. Riders will be able to request a ride home from the Uber Lot, located at the intersection of Anson and Rockingham Roads, a short walk from the tournament’s main entrance. Signage will clearly direct patrons to the Uber Lot. First time Uber riders can download the app from the App Store and use the promo code WYNDHAM17 for a free first ride on uberX, up to $15 in value. 1974 GGO Decanter

1974 ”Where Spring Means More… GGO ‘74” The Old North State is the muse for the 1974 Greater Greensboro Open commemorative decanter. The stopper is a molded golf ball, slightly larger than regulation, complete with dimples. Its raised, mustard colored letters spell out “GGO”. The yellow matches the top and the base of this decanter that originally sold for $15.90 and went on sale in Greensboro State Liquor stores on April 1, 1974. The GGO golf ball sits upon a bright red golf tee that highlights the details in the golf ball’s dimples. The words, “Greater Greensboro Open” appear in a decal just below the tee. North Carolina's state lines are well defined and the state is painted green. This provides a fitting background for the golf course map at the center of the state. A decal reads, “Greensboro, N.C.”, but upon close inspection, the collector will notice the golf course depicted on the bottle is left unidentified. Of course the setting was the Sedgefield Country Club, but again this fact was omitted from this bottle. Red pin flags are placed across the course map and match the red of the golf tee above. This use of color helps to pull the decanter’s elements together. In the left-hand corner of the decanter, another decal reveals the slogan, “Where Spring Means More…GGO ‘74”. This decanter’s design is a departure from the marketing efforts of the previous bottles. The state shaped design seems to claim the tournament to be a statewide event, not just something to be enjoyed within the local Greensboro community. This design shows true vision and is perhaps a precursor to the regionalism that is currently being promoted by Greensboro’s leadership and the leadership of the Wyndham Championship. Paul Fulton, Jr. of Winston-Salem was named the 2007 Honorary Chairman for the Wyndham Championship-the tournament formerly known as the Greater Greensboro Open. According to a press release from the tournament’s media relation department, Fulton is the first honorary chairman selected from outside of Guilford County.

Padraig Harrington to play 2017 Wyndham Championship

Padraig Harrington is a three-time Major winner taking the Open Championship twice and the PGA Championship once. He is a six-time PGA TOUR winner with 18 international wins to his credit; his most recent win was last year’s European Tour Portugal Masters. The Irish star has played in the Ryder Cup six times, the World Cup 11 times, the Dunhill Cup five times, the Seve Trophy four times and the Summer Olympic games last year. He made three previous Wyndham Championship appearances with his best finish coming in 2011 when he finished tied for 47th. With just nine PGA TOUR starts this season, he is 199th in the FedExCup point standings and 146th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

2017 Wyndham Championship Introduces Ralph Lauren Merchandise Pavilion

The Ralph Lauren Merchandise Pavilion, formerly located in the Sedgefield clubhouse, will now be housed in a large tent at the tournament’s new main entrance near the intersection of Wayne Road and East Sedgefield Drive where all parking shuttles will now unload. The merchandise pavilion will be located on the walkway from the shuttles into the tournament making shopping far more convenient for Piedmont Triad golf fans – especially those visiting the Ralph Lauren Merchandise Pavilion when leaving for the day. Those visiting the merchandise pavilion on the way in will have the option of “checking” their purchase for pickup on the way home. The Ralph Lauren Merchandise Pavilion will feature apparel from Polo Golf and Adidas including items such as golf shirts, outer wear, hats, visors and t-shirts. The pavilion will also carry unique Wyndham Championship souvenirs such as umbrellas, pin flags, tumblers, shoe bags, ball markers and much more. In addition to the merchandise pavilion at the main entrance, all tournament patrons will also have access to tournament merchandise at a satellite location in the Sedgefield Country Club pro shop. This location will offer a small selection of the tournament merchandise available at the primary merchandise pavilion.
