Zoeller withdraws from tournament after controversial comments

"Skip Alston of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People accepted Zoeller's apology, but also threatened a boycott of the tournament.

"He didn't insult only Tiger Woods, but the entire African-American community nationwide," Alston said, adding that Zoeller's comments weren't "funny to us. You don't pick at our culture and expect us to laugh."

"It's a tough situation and I feel bad for Fuzzy very much," fellow golfer Mark O'Meara said today. "I know he feels bad. He is taking it very well, but he's hurting pretty hard because he feels he's always been up front with the media and the media has always been good to Fuzzy and then all of the sudden - boom - this happens."

The Greensboro Jaycees, who run the PGA tournament, issued a statement dissociating the organization from Zoeller's comments. But they went ahead with a long-planned tribute to the golfer Tuesday night because he played in the tournament 22 years in a row.

Alston said the Jaycees statement was "trying to sugarcoat their position about Mr. Zoeller." Alston said the NAACP might hold a protest during the tournament."

Jefferson-Pilot supports Chrysler Classic of Greensboro

"Tournament Director Mark Brazil said Jefferson-Pilot is the latest firm to become a "tournament sponsor," which is the third-highest level of sponsors, behind Chrysler, the title sponsor, and "premier partners". (VF Corp.and Harris Teeter)

Though Brazil won't discuss specifics of how much each company is giving to the tournament, the tournament sponsor level starts at $100,000.

Last year, Brazil said, there were six companies that were at or close to the $100,000 level in sponsorship. This year, 11 have already committed to that amount or more.

"The bottom line is that we need companies like our tournament partners and premier partners stepping up to be successful to show the PGA Tour that we're a tournament that's growing and improving as we go," Brazil said."

Gate's "A Reflection of Membership"

"A Reflection of Membership

I was looking at the GGO / CCG website today and noticed a change in the benefits for sponsorship levels. In the past it seems that a certain number of Jaycee Memberships were included with packages. That appears to be no longer the case. In the past, I wondered if this was one way to keep up the paid membership of the Jaycees.

When I last saw the memberships offered, it seems the Jaycees were claiming membership at 350 or so. Now they quote a little over 200 for a recent newspaper article. I wonder if the reported number dropped because memberships are no longer given away to sponsoring companies."
