"The current spot on the calendar for the Wyndham Championship is undoubtedly the main reason we draw such a weak field. The top players simply aren't going to come play right after the PGA Championship and right before the FedEx Cup playoffs.
However, I do think the course itself (as well as the clubhouse/facilities) is part of the problem. It's just not very interesting -- and I speak from personal experience, as I've played Forest Oaks several times.Even with a relatively large purse, the Wyndham has failed to attract not only the top players, but even the mid-level players. The field is usually full of people trying to keep their card for next season, or playing simply because it's one of the only tournaments in which they can get a spot in the field.
That has to reflect on the course and facilities at least a little.I also think that the Davis Love re-design was a big mistake. Forest Oaks was a better layout before they rebuilt the course; the new course is longer but also devoid of the character it previously had."
(Again thanks for reading the Greater Greensboro Open Blog. The ggoblogger often wonders if the success of the Wyndham Championship has more to do with the fact that the tournament is played in Greensboro than it has to do with the course that it is played on?)
