It was never clear why the balloon got free, but it did and it flew away. It was a very surreal experience. It was funny and sad all at the same time. Everyone felt helpless as it continued to get smaller. We never did find out where it landed, but at the time we where afraid it would hit a plane. Rumors started about a F-14 shooting it down. I was telling a couple of current Jaycees about the balloon that got away and they asked, "Is that the one they shot down?"
