Garcia to play Wyndham Championship

Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Charles Howell III and Ryan Moore have all committed to play in the Wyndham Championship. Each made the commitment prior to the PGA TOUR deadline. Paul Azinger sustained an injury at the PGA Championship today and was forced to with draw from the Wyndham Championship.

Garcia is currently sixth in the Official World Golf Rankings and 114th in the FedExCup point standings. He finished the 2008 season ranked No. 2 in the world and third in the battle for the FedExCup. Garcia will be making his second Wyndham Championship appearance; he finished tied for 13th when he was here in 2005. He has seven PGA TOUR victories in addition to 11 international wins.

Scott has six PGA TOUR victories among 14 worldwide wins. He is currently 46th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 110th in the FedExCup point standings. In 2006, he finished the season No. 3 on the PGA TOUR money list and ranked No. 4 in the world. The next season, he suffered a broken right pinky finger. Last season, he won on both PGA TOUR and European Tour despite injury and illness. His best finish of the 2009 season was a runner-up performance at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Scott will be making his second appearance here; he tied for 64th in 2005.

“These are phenomenal last-minute commitments,” tournament director Mark Brazil said. “To have two fan favorites like Sergio and Adam in the Wyndham field is fantastic. These guys are like rock stars, and we’re looking forward to having them at Sedgefield Country Club next week.”

Howell is 31st in the FedExCup point standings and 99th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Howell will be making his third appearance in the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event, and his best finish came in 2006 when he finished tied for 19th.

Moore is 76th in the FedExCup point standings and 120th in the world. The Las Vegas resident has made four previous appearances here; he finished tied for sixth in 2006 to record his best finish in this event. His best finish this year was fourth place in the Traveler’s Championship.
