HENRY C. POE

HIGH POINT— Henry C. Poe, 89, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at High Point Regional Hospital.

"As a young boy in the early 1920s Henry Poe grafted golf clubs by hand at Hillandale Golf Club under the tutelage of his father who was the golf professional and eventually rose to become president of the Professional Golfers' Association of America. Henry Poe attended high school in Durham and played No. 1 on his high school golf team. He played amateur golf tournaments throughout the South with moderate success. Finishing as low amateur in many of the open golf tournaments, he won the Eastern Amateur Championship in 1934, 1935, and 1936, was medallist in the Southern Amateur on two occasions, and won several invitational golf tournaments. As an amateur, he served as a director of the Carolinas Golf Association. After finishing high school, he was awarded a full, four-year scholarship to Duke University where he played on the Duke Golf Team for three years. He chose to turn professional in October 1937 prior to his senior year. He played in the inaugural Greater Greensboro Open. "
