2006 Memory Walk by Lynn Grayson

"The walk will be held at Jaycee Park on June 3, 2006. The 2005 Memory Walk raised $54,989, and this year’s goal is $80,000. Memory Walk is the signature event of the Alzheimer’s Association, raising much needed awareness and funds for local programs and services benefiting families and individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association chose to honor Carson Bain, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, for his lifetime of civic involvement in Greensboro and Guilford County. Mr. Bain is not only a former mayor of Greensboro, but also a Guilford County Commissioner, Greensboro School Board Member, GGO General Chairman, president of the Greensboro Jaycees, and founder of the Greensboro Generals Hockey Team. He started Bain Oil Company in 1941 by selling oil in five-gallon containers.

Bobby Bain, Carson’s son and current President of Bain Oil Company, will be this year’s Memory Walk chairman. “We hope to have over 1000 walkers this year and bring much needed awareness about this disease as well as hope for those families affected by it,” said Bain.

All proceeds from the Memory Walk benefit local programs provided by the Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter including the 24-hour Helpline, support groups, educational programs and training for caregivers. One in ten persons over age 65 and nearly half of those over 85 have Alzheimer’s disease. An estimated 14 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s disease by the middle of this century. Former President Ronald Reagan and Greensboro’s own, Kathleen Bryan, lost their battle against Alzheimer’s disease. Carson Bain has suffered from Alzheimer’s since 1999. He presently lives in his home with his wife and caregiver, Fanny Bain.
