Gate Ask "Is this what the Jaycees Had In Mind?"

(I usually just reprint an excerpt from a post, but this one was so well written that I didn't feel right disemboweling it for parts. I have often said that I disagree with many of the things Gate says on his blog, but I do think that he is fair. In the year or so the I have been reading www.gatecity.blogspot.com I have found it to be very pro-tournament.)

"A friend forward us an e-mail today that asked for GGO volunteers. It even said that area chairmanships were available. And it made quite clear that one did not have to be a Jaycee to have a position of responsibility for the tournament. Is this how far the Jaycees have fallen or is it a result of the restructuring?

We know that for years the Jaycees have been helped by the community in running the tournament, but the Jaycees were always in leadership positions. Now you can be in a position of responsibility simply by walking in off the street. We don't understand. Do the Jaycees not have enough members to even fill the leadership positions necessary to run the tournament?

And if someone does not have to be a Jaycee to be a leader, why have the Jaycees at all? Will the new board eventually take over the volunteer recruitment duties completely through the tournament director and their staff?

Commentators have talked positively about tournament Jaycees on this blog in the past, and we have come to see their point. Joining the Jaycees to help the tournament is still joining the Jaycees. But now you don't even need to join the Jaycees to have a hand in the tournament. It makes us sad to think about it. We like the volunteer tradition of the GGO and would have wished it to continue.

Never have we been against the Jaycees. We prefer to think that we have been pro-tournament. With the reorganization, we thought maybe the Jaycees and the tournament could both survive and prosper. Maybe we were too helpful."
