Jim Schlosser-Guest on FMTalk 101.1 Brad and Britt Show

Jim Schlosser appeared on the Tuesday, September 13, 2005 FMTalk 101.1 Brad and Britt show to discuss his article entitled "Melvin:Golf tourney in peril", that appeared in the September 10th Greensboro News & Record.

Brad started the interview by saying, "PGA has put the tournament on notice. It's like Survivor." He continued his introduction by saying,"Because Charlotte (Wachovia Championship) was able to explode out of the box, it put pressure on a more traditional tournament (Chrysler Classic of Greensboro).

Brad said "it seems like there's an agenda" referring to the way in which the News & Record has covered the recent foundation related events. He expressed his feelings that there was a negative feel to the stories.

Jim Schlosser, by phone, responded by saying, "When someone like Jim Melvin says it's do or die time, you listen."

Schlosser continued by saying, "They've (Greensboro Jaycees) lost oversight. The PGA has forced cities to form these non-profits to control tournaments."

Jim said that he loved the tournament and the he had been attending the event since 1953 when he was a kid. He went on to say that he understood Jim Melvin's concerns that the tournament be played before the TOUR Championship.

Schlosser said, "We've got to stay before the TOUR Championship."

Jim ended the interview by saying some nice things about Forest Oaks. "You can putt on the fairway." He told a story about eight time champ Sam Snead making comments in the 1960's about how Greensboro deserves a better course. He compared Forest Oaks to the course at Quail Hollow and said "I don't think the course is that much better." (He did say that the houses around that course looked like "castles".

(Brad and Britt have been critial of the News & Record's coverage of local events since a it reported that the recent, well attended Neil Boortz events had over a "100" people, when the actual number was closer to 600.)

No question about the agenda with the News and Record. None. Zero. Nada.

Quail Hollow is an awesome course, don't let anyone fool you. Part of the allure is that they have a very limited number of members, so it is not played that often. The houses around are castles, and a gaurd is on watch 24 hours at the country club gate. You cannot just drive up to Quail Hollow without being a member or on a list.

Food is great, too. Best selection of single malt scotch in NC.

Good golf course. So is Forest Oaks though. Houses are night and day.

By PGA Tour standards, Forest Oaks is very ordinary. I am a tournament golfer, and I rank Forest Oaks no better than good, although the conditioning is excellent. Love's redesign arguably made the course more interesting, but it is certainly easier now, too.

I discount Snead's comments since he died before Quail Hollow's last renovation. It is now worthy of hosting a major championship and is rated excellent, even by Tour standards.

Patrick, do you think that Forest Oaks is the best course in Greensboro?
